La Santona: a hamlet belonging to the municipality of Lama Mocogno, seven kilometres away from Serramazzoni and at an altitude of 1165 metres above sea level. The story goes that the name “La Santona” comes from the name of a woman, Santa Bortolai, who, during the building works of the Via Giardini, built an inn at the crossroads of Via Vandelli and Via Giardini, where the workers involved in the building of the road could sleep and eat. This woman, rather on the large side, was often called “Santona” or “Big Santa”. In time, the inn became well-known and so too its proprietor, so much so that “Santona” ended up referring not just to the inn and its owner but the village itself, which, over the years expanded and developed around the Via Giardini. La Santona has long been known as a holiday resort, thanks to its fresh air and mild climate and its splendid panorama. Because of the increasing importance over the years of the village as a tourist destination, an oratory was built, which is still well-preserved to this day. Several hotels were also built, including the famous Albergo Impero. Although the development of Santona was slowed down following the events of the war, it still remains one of the best holiday resorts of our area.
